I used the EL inverter from the Adafruit EL wire starter pack - http://www.adafruit.com/products/320

The inverter itself was simply taped to a wooden bokken (practice sword), just under the handguard, and the wire was taped around the perimeter of the blade and secured with Kapton tape. I'm working on a significantly more advanced and sturdier version two, which I'll post about here once sufficient progress has been made.

John,
I have kind of a round about question for you. I linked to your site from a post you made on adafruit on a article about an El wire Katana. I have been mulling over a similar but completely different project of the same size. I was wondering if you knew what inverter was used for the katana and where on the prop it was placed. Any info you could give on your build would help me greatly, or if you knew who I could speak to get the info would be great.

Adrian- Just plain old thermal receipt paper.
RATz - thanks for reminding me. I'll slap the code up on github. It's not pretty, and has a fair number of dependencies, but it'd be a good starting point.
